Case studies
Case study #1 - Australian Institute of Petroleum (AIP)
Established in 1976, the Australian Institute of Petroleum has gained national and world-wide recognition as a key representative body of Australia's petroleum industry. AIP's mission is to promote and assist in the development of a strong internationally competitive Australian petroleum products industry, operating efficiently, economically and safely, and in harmony with the environment and community standards.
ORIMA Research has been monitoring retail and wholesale petrol prices for the Australian Institute of Petroleum (AIP) since late 2001.
On a daily basis, we collect and collate world oil prices and wholesale petrol prices for most Australian capital cities. This information is used to provide daily updates of several charts and tables on the AIP's website.
On a weekly basis, we collect retail petrol prices directly from the major petrol producers for over 100 locations across Australia. The data are provided by the producers in several different formats and timeframes - some is sent daily and some at the end of the week. In an average week, we receive over 100,000 points of data that are filtered, validated and compiled into the final database showing the average daily price for each location. In this process, we use several data bridging techniques to help ensure the reliability and robustness of the final database. The consolidated database is then used to update several web pages and historical charts for each of the 100 locations and various aggregated regions (e.g. States and National price levels) on the AIP's website (www.aip.com.au).
Case study #2 - Roads ACT
Roads ACT manages the road and stormwater networks in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
ORIMA Research assisted Roads ACT to analyse submissions from the public on the Gungahlin Drive Extension road project. ORIMA conducted data entry and categorisation of these submissions. The categorisation was designed to fully quantify the issues raised in the submissions and enabled detailed reporting, charting and cross-tabulation of data.
